Far Rockaway Power Station 1953-2012

Located at Bay 24th Street in Far Rockaway, Queens, the power station was initially coal-fired and was converted to a dual-fueled plant with coal/fuel oil in 1966. Since 1994, the station utilized natural gas exclusively. The plant retired at a capacity of 100 MW in 2015, as part of a decommissioning effort of LIPA’s inefficient legacy power plants, which at the time saved customers approximately $76 million.
