Seniors and Electric Safety
The Long Island Power Authority offers these tips to make your home a safe place for yourself and your loved ones -all year long.

Follow this list to insure the safety of you and your loved ones.
- Don't overload outlets. An overloaded outlet is a fire hazard.
- Always unplug an electric appliance by pulling on the plug itself, not the wire. Pulling on the wire could cause it to become frayed and weakened.
- Be prepared for an emergency. Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries near your bedside. Remove any clutter from doors and hallways that could be a tripping hazard in the dark.
- If someone in your home uses life support, call LIPA at 1-800-490-0025 or 631-755-6000. In storm situations, we'll call you so you can make advanced preparations.
- In power outage situations, never use candles of open flames for illumination.
- Never leave electric heaters and hot plates unattended when in use.
- Make sure you're using the correct wattage and proper kind of bulb in your lighting fixtures.
- Keep your grandchildren safe by using safety covers for unused outlets.
- Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous to persons of all ages.
- In the bathroom, unplug all small appliances when not in use. Appliances immersed in a sink or bathtub while plugged in can cause a lethal shock.
- Never use nails or tacks to keep electric cords in place.
- Don't hide electrical cords under carpets or area rugs. Heat from the cord could cause a fire.
- If you see a downed power line or an emergency situation, call LIPA at 1-800-490-0075
