Brookhaven Town Hall Wind Turbine

A Bergey Windpower 10 kW wind turbine was installed in May 2003 at the Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville.

Erected atop a self-supporting lattice tower, the turbine features state-of-the-art blades designed in conjunction with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The turbine was installed as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Powering America program and is currently supplying a waste treatment plant at the site.

Under this program, AWS Scientific, Inc., based in Albany, NY, installed four turbines in New York and New Jersey.

The Town of Brookhaven was selected because of its keen interest in renewable energy.

LIPA co-sponsored the turbine as part of its commitment to renewable energy, and to bring future plans for wind energy on Long Island a little closer to fruition with the installation of small units for demonstration purposes.

Data is being collected on the power and voltage output of the turbine, as well as wind speed, wind direction, and air temperature. This data will be used by the Department of Energy.
