Solar Pioneer Consumer Checklist
If you want to purchase a PV system, you are probably going
to need a PV dealer/installer. You can choose to contact LIPA's
Solar Contractors. You may also check your local phone directly
under Solar Energy Equipment or contact LI Shines for a list of
PV installers. It is always advisable to obtain several bids
before making a selection.
Before you install a PV system, remember to:
- Shop around to compare prices before choosing a PV
contractor. Compare the system features, warranties and
expected electrical output from each system. It is usually a
good idea to get more than one proposal from different
contractors so that you can compare pricing and system
features.
- Ask each PV contractor for customer references. You can
also check with your local Office of Consumer Affairs.
- Be sure that the PV contractor provides you with a
written contract that includes a list of equipment with
specific model numbers, prices and warranties for your PV
system, as well as the cost of installing your system. Also
make sure you know when to expect delivery and installation
of your system. Read and understand the contract before
signing it and keep a copy for your records.
- Examine the warranties offered by the PV contractor
carefully and know their limitations. Be sure you know who
is responsible for honoring the warranty ¬ the installer,
the dealer, the builder or the manufacturer. Warranties are
very important to ensure that your PV system will be
repaired if something should malfunction during the warranty
period.
- Check to be sure that the materials are exactly as you
ordered or specified before and during installation. Do not
accept them if they do not match the equipment listed in
your contract.
- The PV contractor can assist you in obtaining all
building permits and Inspections. Your system must be
inspected and approved by a local inspector before it can
operate
- Have the PV contractor review the PV system with you so
that you understand its operation and what, if anything, is
required by you for its operation and maintenance. Be sure
the contractor supplies you with PV manual(s) for the
operation of the equipment, and have the contractor review
the manual with you.
