What to Expect
Thank you for your interest in LIPA’s Residential Energy
Affordability Partnership (REAP) program. By allowing us to
investigate the opportunities for electrical energy efficiency
opportunities in your home, we should be able to provide you
with savings at no cost to you.
I am interested. What sort of things will you do?
- We will replace, whenever possible, any incandescent
light bulbs, operated for at least an hour per day, with
compact fluorescent models which, while providing the same
or greater light output, use 2/3rds the energy and produce a
lot less heat.
- Your refrigerator will be metered during the site visit
(typically lasting an hour or so) to determine if its
consumption is high enough to warrant replacement with a
high efficiency model.
- If you have an electric water heater, we will look for
opportunities to reduce hot water consumption and heat loss
from the tank and pipes.
- If you have a central air conditioner, we will inspect
any ductwork in the attic since they tend to leak, or are
even partially disconnected, reducing effectiveness, wasting
energy and costing you money. Any important leakage
locations found will be sealed with long-lasting materials.
- Also, if you have gas or oil-fired equipment, we will
conduct testing to ensure their safe operation.
What is expected of me?
- We would appreciate having a responsible adult present
who is authorized to sign our forms and to allow us access
to all areas of the house or apartment.
- If there is central air conditioning and the ducts are
in the attic, we will need access to the attic, often
located through a hatch in the closet or by means of
pull-down stairs in the hallway.
- There will be a number of questions that will be asked,
allowing us to document site conditions and to determine
what efficiency measures will be cost-effective to install.
Your cooperation in answering these questions will be
appreciated.
- Please try to keep the scheduled appointment. If
cancellation is necessary, however, please call us to
reschedule.
How long will the site visit take?
- There is a wide variation in the amount of time required
to complete the visit. Typically, a visit lasts from 60 – 90
minutes. Central air conditioning sites tend to take another
30 – 60 minutes and duct sealing work is often scheduled for
another time to minimize the time required for a given site
visit.
- If your refrigerator is to be replaced, the replacement
will occur at a later time. You will be notified when the
new model will be delivered so that you will have time to
remove the contents of the existing unit. As required by the
program, your old unit will be removed, “de-manufactured”,
and its components recycled.
