Clean, zero-emission electric vehicles (EVs) are making
inroads in the transportation area as an increasingly viable
alternative to gasoline-powered engines, which are recognized as
the leading cause of urban smog and other pollution problems.
“Clean Commute” EV Program
Under this program, a total of 40 Ford Th!nk electric commuter cars
were placed at the Hicksville and Huntington Long Island Rail Road
train stations in 2001 for a three-year statewide demonstration.
Commuters leased the vehicles from authorized Ford dealerships,
and are able to recharge vehicles at home. Dedicated parking spots
and charging stations were also provided at the train stations.
Global Electric Motorcars (GEM)
GEM, a subsidiary of Daimler Chrysler Corporation, donated 50 GEM
neighborhood vehicles to LIPA. These vehicles are legal in New York
State on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 MPH or lower. On
October 30, 2003, LIPA held a press event to announce the program
under which they will distribute the vehicles to Nassau and Suffolk
County parks, universities and municipalities.
Hybrid
Bus
The purpose of this R&D project is to develop and demonstrate a
plug-in hybrid electric bus, with an all-electric range of +25 MPH.
It is part of a $2 million EPRI/Department of Energy effort
(initiated by LIPA). The frame and body of the bus are being
supplied by El Dorado Coach, while the power train and hybrid drive
systems are being designed, constructed and integrated by Odyne
Corporation, a Hauppauge-based company.
