On April 22, 1970, 20 million people across America
celebrated the first Earth Day. Now Earth Day is celebrated
annually around the world. Through the combined efforts of the
U.S. government, grassroots organizations and citizens like you,
what started as a day of national environmental recognition has
evolved into a worldwide campaign to protect our global
environment.
There are many things you can do at work, home and within
your community to help protect the environment. If every
American home replaced just one light with an ENERGY STAR
qualified bulb, each year we would save enough energy to light
more than 3 million homes, save more than $600 million in energy
costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions
of more than 800,000 cars.
In honor of Earth Day 2008, LIPA is offering its customers a
special lighting promotion. Between March 1 and May 31, residential customers are
eligible to receive 50 cents off eligible ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs at participating retail stores. CFLs in single packs will
be 50 cents off while CFLs in multiple bulb packages will be up
to $4 off.
