Electric Safety Poster Contest
Welcome back to the second half of the 2007-2008 school year.
With the start of the New Year, I’d like to invite your school
to participate in the Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) 10th
Annual Electric Safety Poster Contest.
Ever since the big blackout in August 2003, we’ve encouraged
students to incorporate emergency preparedness as well as
electric safety into their submissions. While the core mission
of LIPA’s Poster Contest is to prompt students to think about
electric safety, we can’t forget what happened to families along
the Gulf Coast when many were unprepared for the dangerous
storms that did billions of dollars in damage and claimed so
many lives. That’s why we’d like to encourage students to
incorporate readiness messages into their artwork. An example
might be to show family members with flashlights, bottled water,
etc.
Last year’s response from Long Island schools was great. You can
view the winning posters on the LIPA Web site,
www.lipower.org, and
winning posters from previous contests all have been made into
book covers that are distributed to schools upon request.
A panel of impartial judges will choose the winners from all the
entries. Four winning posters will be selected from each grade
Island-wide: 12 winners total. Each winner will receive a
commemorative plaque of their poster and a gift certificate.
Additionally, all winning posters will be made into a book
cover. The winning participants will be contacted in April.
Winners, their families and teachers will be invited to a
ceremony where the posters will be unveiled for members of the
media. This ceremony will be held in May, which is Electric
Safety Month.
